1. Who is responsible for your data

Segen Finance is a trading name of Segen Limited, registered in England and Wales (company number 05309114), registered office 200 Fowler Avenue, Farnborough, England, GU14 7JP. For the purposes of UK data protection law, Segen Limited is the controller of the personal data described in this policy.

We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, registration number Z3064707.

If you have a question about this policy or about how we handle your data, please contact us using the details in section 11.

2. What this policy covers

This policy covers the personal data we handle as a credit broker and as the operator of this website. It does not cover what Zopa Bank Limited does with your data once you apply for credit, or what your installer does with it. Both have their own privacy notices, and you should read those too.

3. What personal data we collect

When you use this website. The site sets no cookies and includes no analytics or advertising tags. It stores one item in your browser to remember your cookie choice, which contains no identifier. Our hosting provider will record technical data such as your IP address in server logs, as any web server does, for security and diagnostics. See our cookie policy for the detail.

When you contact us. Your name, contact details, and whatever you tell us in your message.

When your installer prepares a proposal involving Segen Finance. Your name and contact details, the address where the system is to be installed, details of the proposed system and its price, and the finance term requested.

When you make a complaint. Your name and contact details, the details of your complaint, and our correspondence with you about it.

We do not collect your bank details, your income, or your credit history. Those go to Zopa as part of your credit application, not to us.

4. Why we use it, and our lawful basis

Purposes for processing personal data and the lawful basis for each
What we use it for Lawful basis
Introducing you to Zopa so you can apply for finance Necessary for the performance of a contract, or steps taken at your request before entering one
Answering your questions and providing customer service Legitimate interests: responding to people who contact us
Investigating and responding to complaints Legal obligation (FCA complaint-handling rules)
Keeping records to demonstrate regulatory compliance Legal obligation
Preventing and detecting fraud, and keeping our systems secure Legitimate interests, and legal obligation

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have considered whether our interest is fair to you, and you can object at any time (see section 9).

We do not use your data for marketing without your consent, and we do not sell it to anyone.

5. Who we share it with

  • Zopa Bank Limited, as the lender, when you choose to apply for finance. Zopa makes its own lending decision and is an independent controller of the data you give it, meaning Zopa decides how it uses that data, and its own privacy notice governs it.
  • Your installer, who prepares your proposal and carries out the work. Only installers in the Segen network can offer our finance, so this will be one of them.
  • Our service providers, for example our hosting provider, IT suppliers and professional advisers. They act on our instructions and are bound by contract to protect your data.
  • Regulators and other authorities, including the Financial Conduct Authority and the Financial Ombudsman Service, where we are required or permitted to do so.

6. Credit checks

Applying for finance involves a credit check, which is run by Zopa, not by us, and is recorded on your credit file. The impact of a single application is usually small, but several applications in a short period can have a larger effect.

Because Zopa carries out the search, Zopa's privacy notice and its credit reference agency notice explain how that data is used and shared with credit reference agencies.

For more information on how Zopa uses credit reference agencies, please see the credit reference agencies section of Zopa's privacy notice.

7. How long we keep it

We keep personal data only as long as we need it.

  • Records relating to a finance introduction: six years, in line with GDPR and ICO guidelines.
  • Complaint records: three years from the date we received the complaint.

8. Transfers outside the UK

We aim to keep personal data within the UK and the European Economic Area. Where a service provider processes data outside those areas, we make sure an appropriate safeguard is in place — normally UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement.

9. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • be told how your data is used — which is what this policy is for;
  • get a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • have it corrected if it is wrong or incomplete;
  • have it erased, where we no longer have a good reason to keep it;
  • restrict how we use it while a question about it is resolved;
  • object to our using it where we rely on legitimate interests;
  • receive it in a portable form, where we hold it on the basis of consent or contract; and
  • withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent.

These rights have limits — for example, we may need to keep records to meet a regulatory obligation even if you ask us to erase them. If that applies we will explain why.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will respond within one month. There is no charge.

10. Complaining about how we handle your data

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please tell us first so we can put it right — see our complaints page.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator, at any time:

  • Website: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint
  • Helpline: 0303 123 1113
